“Car hit me. I hit car.”
I was doored on Bloor Street in July and thrown into a passing vehicle. The police decided not to lay charges against the driver because the injuries “were not serious in nature.” I am a very confident cyclist, particularly when riding with traffic, but the lack of infrastructure in the city and the police’s decision…

Best Book of the Year
I’m delighted that Yiddish for Pirates by Gary Barwin has made the Globe 100 and National Post Best Books of the Year lists. The National Post calls it “light-hearted but with uncommon depth.” Update: Yiddish for Pirates was also named one of CBC Books’ “12 best Canadian Debut Novels of the Year.”

May I have your card?
I’m delighted to now have business cards! My friend Tina Matei designed these cards. (Tina also designed this website.) I hired a local printer, Nola Grimes at printNG. When I say “local,” I mean the printer is located within a twenty-minute walk of my workspace.

In house or at home?
On Friday I had the great pleasure of speaking with Shannon Gerard and the students in the Publications undergrad program at OCAD University. I focused on what it was like to edit in house (“corporate publishing”) for eight years, and my experiences as a freelancer, in which I mostly edit at home. Venn diagram much?

Don’t want it darker?
If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame You want it darker We kill the flame …from “You Want It Darker” by Leonard Cohen Last week was heavy, to put it mildly. The election of Trump, the death of Leonard Cohen…it felt like one shock and grief after another. In response, I’ve been…

Funded!
I’m so happy to announce that The Reading Line has received Toronto Arts Council support! We’ve been holding our annual book rides since 2014, always on a shoestring budget. We have ambitious plans for 2017, and we’re excited about how this grant can help us expand our reach and, more importantly, pay writers. Thank you,…

Let us compare mythologies
I am saddened, almost beyond words, at the news of Leonard Cohen’s death. I’m naturally wary of celebrity worship, but Cohen’s poetry, music, and way of being have affected and inspired me for much of my life. His decisions to approach the music business in his own fashion, and then opt out, whether for life in…

Jane100
I’ve blogged previously about 2016 being the “year of Jane,” with events planned around the world to honour the legacy of Jane Jacobs. Toronto is holding its own Jane100 celebrations, with “100 days of Jane” (or 100 events), from May 2016 to May 2017. The Reading Line’s “Books on Bathurst” ride in May 2016, which paid tribute to Jane…
