Sparks of creativity! BOOM a brilliant idea! It can be exhilarating to come up with a fresh idea. But how are you going to execute it? How are you going to tend to that idea and watch it grow?
In Hocus Pocus, Kurt Vonnegut writes, “Everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance.”
Stick to a routine. Join a writing group. Track word counts. That’s how you build.
Get back to your routine. Address the problem. Put in the time, even after the boom is a distant echo. That’s how you maintain.
Don’t overlook the merits of maintenance. As marketers tell us, it takes more energy to nab a new client than to keep an existing client. It takes more energy to constantly come up with new ideas than to work on the one you have.
Are you constantly starting over? Or are you taking care of what you have?
